Re: Oxidized gelcoat that is shiny?
You know im not very good at taking many pictures lol. but here are some of the highlights. a video showing the quality of shine would be much better in this case. That has turned into one beautiful boat. And I think it is cool that you are going to make a video. 😂 Thanks for going into detail on w...

Re: Oxidized gelcoat that is shiny?
well I went down the rabbit hole and watched a ton of his videos to see if i could replicate his technique. I have an 18DV from my buddy right now that is seriously oxidized and figured this was a good opportunity to try it out. Wow, your friends boat came back from the dead! You know that we want ...

Re: Oxidized gelcoat that is shiny?
Full blown 42 minute extravaganza on how the boat held up over a summer being on Lake Washington near Seattle. Also what procedures and products were chosen to clean her up. More important is the reasoning is explained on why the procedures and products were used for this particular boat. https://y...

Re: 263 Oxidation Progress
Its a cutting compound I'm using. Didn't do any wet sanding - there were some that said you could do these products without a wet sand. I've been spending about 1 hour on 4-5 feet of boat and doing it over several afternoons after work. There is a second finer compound I'll do next - hoping it is w...

Re: Oxidized gelcoat that is shiny?
I am having a hard time getting the grittiness out of the yellow section. Wet sanding up to 3k seems to work the best right now You can still feel the grittiness after 3000 grit and compounding? That sounds weird. Could it be that the gelcoat is so old at this point that the pores have become large...

Re: Oxidized gelcoat that is shiny?
Product and technique for removing oxidation are also a function of how embedded the oxidation is. Mine was a stage-3 cancer. I tried countless products (including a commercial-grade compound). The oxidation just laughed. Switched to 1500g wet, then 1000g, then 600g. The oxidation just giggled. The...

Re: Oxidized gelcoat that is shiny?
I follow Drake on YouTube also. He seems to be a likable fellow with a lot of energy. He is fun to watch. But I don’t trust him on gelcoat. He never shows his results in the sun where it really matters. Anything will look shiny in the shade. https://youtu.be/Vu8ZiHBt3EY Lol this guy really hates sa...

Re: Oxidized gelcoat that is shiny?
I feel like the first video was cheating a bit by using an 8" buffing pad against a 5" random orbit sander. A bigger sander might fare better, saving a smaller one for corners if needed. If a large area needs to have significant oxidation removed, I like the idea of a large, flat backing ...

Re: Need some help please on buffing--I think I may have screwed up
Wash with dawn and strip everything off back down to the bare gel coat. if you still have the streaks then you need to correct it with buffing. You need a rotary buffer and not a DA with a yellow pad. you can use a foam pad on a DA for polishing, but if you are using while wool or yellow pads they n...

Re: Pending Cobalt Purchase - Advice On Outdrive Condition?
They repainted them. They probably looked horrible before they did that but doesn't mean they aren't fine mechanically. Check the gear oil and look for water intrusion. Of course, if it did have previous water intrusion, they would have likely already changed the gear oil to hide that aspect. If I ...
