Here is an interesting little DIY project from back when Popular Mechanics magazine assumed many of their readers could operate a metal lathe. The article is from October 1978. The cool part to me is that the cylinder bore diameter of 1.128” was not chosen at random. It turns out that a circle with ...

Another neat feature that you might not know is that for $25 or so you can get an adapter that plugs into the 6 pin OBD-M connector and converts it to the standard OBDII style connector, where you can then just use your regular vehicle scanner. Nice job on the custom cable. Is this the OBD2 to Mari...

Nice!
The gelcoat and upholstery look pretty good for being 23 years old. Was she stored indoors?
I assume this is the picture of the upholstery before you’ve had a chance to clean it? It will be interesting to see how well she cleans up.

I can look at how it is attached next time I am at the lake.

Do you guys pump out the waste tank yourself or does the marina do it? Is it just a single pump out, or is it refilled and then pumped out several times for cleaning? I noticed that your R5’s have a nifty little shelf on the port side of the head compartment. That space where your shelf is located i...

Do you have the wiring diagrams from the Cobalt factory? You can troubleshoot without the diagrams, but is a lot easier with them. The bilge pump should come on automatically via the bilge float switch if there is water in the bilge, but it is really nice to confirm operation with the helm bilge pum...

Did I read this right? OMC "mounted the engine and sterndrive on the *stringers* of the boat." So if the stringers go bad or get squishy, you're in a world of trouble? Yes, if the stringers get rotten then you are in a world of hurt. My stringers had gotten rotten in the 1990’s and my boa...

The ball gears wear and you will be lucky to find OEM ball My 1977 Beachcraft has the OMC electric shift outdrive and my childhood buddy who ran a boat shop for 40 years said that not many of these electric shift outdrives are still working. The ball gears really do not wear much IF you never run t...
