That looks sharp! Next time you’re fighting washers like that put a little dab of grease on the washer. The grease will hid it in place while you put the nut on.

Yeah, don’t spend any money rebuilding an OMC drive, you’ll never get that money back, and it won’t be cheap. Turn it in for the core and be done with it. If you want to keep the boat long term start researching an Alpha 1 swap when the ‘new’ drive fails.
