Looking for help.

Post by Big Block Power »

I am looking for help from anyone that has a 2010 and up that has a Volvo 8.1 engine cover/cowl that looks like this. The boat can't be older than 7 years old. Because of the 7 year time I can't buy one. It's not sold by Volvo. Cobalt only. So I would like to know if you would ordered it for me and I'll cover the expenses thanks again ahead of time.

I doubt Cobalt really made the throttle body cover themselves, and it looks like that's the part that you can't buy from Volvo. I wonder who made it - I'll look around for an OEM source.

Sounds great.I contacted Volvo. No luck from them. I hope you have better luck than me.

I don't see that any variants of the 8.1 from Volvo come with that throttle body cover. It looks like a "whistle fix" for the whistle problems they had - maybe a Mercury part? I'll poke around some more...

Right cobalt added it because it sucks air right towards the rear seat so they came out with this to deflect the noise. I have the filter on the throttle body. Helped a bit. Still could have adjusted the throttle body around some. I'll see how this new engine is too. I like the looks of it.

It will be interesting y see if it helps any. This gxi is louder than the gi. I wish cobalt insulated the engine compartments some. And not count on just the seat cushions.
It's a intruding picture.

I wonder if you could put some Dynamat or foam or something on the underside of the engine compartment lid? There's a lot of stuff rated for automotive use that should hold up ok on a boat.

Yea exactly. I will see how this deflector changes things first then it's dynamat time. It's nothing I can't live with.

I learned on this boat that the rear sun deck cover doesn't rest on the black seal/molding/weatherstrip that goes around the engine cover/sun deck. With the cover resting on the rear seat bottom I can run my finger between the whole cover and seal. If I put it so the cover rests against the rubber bump stops like it should there's even more room. So I'm going to check my black boat to see how much clearance it has and replace it with a thicker seal. With the rear top cushions off it's real easy to feel how much of it isn't touching. Also none of my bump stops where holding up the rear cover. They are all adjustable so that's fixed.

Hmm - I'd think you could adjust bump stops to raise/lower the height so that it seals well. I'll have to take a look at my own Cobalt come spring and see how it's configured. Getting a good seal should cut down on high frequency noise in particular.

That's what you would think. I've noticed gel coat rubbed off on the last three 220's Ive had in the corner where it can hit the bottom of the seats. That why I adjusted it up so it wasn't rubbing on the seat and rest on the bump stops. My black 220 was quite a bit louder than my last one and I think this is a big reason why.when I got the rear sun deck cushions off I pushed down along the rear of the lid and it flexed alot so I knew it wasn't resting on the rear bumper either. It flexed alot. So now I got the bumpers just touching the lid so that helps support the lid/hatch cover.

Update on this. The whistle is gone with this Cobalt deflector! Still have some engine noise but who doesn't want to hear their engine:-) The engine lid doesn't touch the rubber seal just a bad design.

I know we chatted or whistled about this

My K&N flame arresters did take the whistle away 90 percent from the Iac..maybe redirect air flow as opposed to a mesh screen??

But it pushed on on the merc 496ho cover and I didn't want to trim it. So off they came.

No performance gain btw.
Wonder if they'll work on Volvo.. I slightly get it with the 282 but it is very sound deadened.

Depends on the engine cover and sealing like you said.
