R7 380 vs 430 - any hands on?

Post by Ballvice »

Just checking if anyone has any real hands on comparison between the VP 380 vs 430 in a R7

I'm looking at a 2016 with the 430 vs a 2017 with the 380.

Curious top end speed differences

No hands on, so I can't help you there.
From what I've read, about 3-4 mph difference (380 vs.430) with the 6.0l.
The 17' 6.2L 380 improves acceleration by 24%, which should make it quicker and faster than the old 430.

Make sure the 17' you are looking at has the gen 5 engine. Most still have the 6.0L platform.

What Tuscany says meshes with what I've heard - expect 50mph out of the 380, and just shy of 55mph out of the 430. Either of the new engines are more fuel efficient and develop more torque at lower rpm than the old 6.0l engines, so I'd go with a new 6.2l 380 over an old 6.0l 430 unless I really needed that last few mph on the top end for some reason.

I was reading this morning and that 2016 might just have the 6.2. Worth checking on :-)

The engine on the window sticker of the 2017 os the W\V8-380CE DP 380HP.

Not sure how to tell the difference in the 6.0 - 6.2

Also interesting to me is the price difference - the 2016 being higher than the 2017 - but almost the same options - just a difference in the engine.

Ballvice, if you can get the serial number on the engine- call the dealer, it's on the flame arrester or call Cobalt with the VIN you should be to find out block info through the Volvo website. Here's the link to find your engine, just input the serial number

From what I have just read, VP unveiled the Gen 5 engines, including the new 6.2L at the Miami Boat show on February 20th.
That would make it impossible for a 16' to have it, and most of the 17' model year boats as well.

If you do decide to take one of those boats, I would suggest opting for the 17'.
So many interior improvements over the 16'.

Personally, I would find a Gen 5..
I'm guessing the new 380 with outperform the old 430 by a noticeable margin.
The 6.0L is an engine that has been around in its current state for years. Built with cast iron heads, and meant for commercial longevedy. I own one, it's solid, but not a performance engine.
The new 6.2L will be based on performance. I also own one in a 420 hp GMC Denali, and it's a awesome engine. Better flowing heads and direct injection alone will be a huge gain. Bump up the compression by 2 points, (another full point over our Denali) and you will have a real nice performance package.
The only downside? The new 6.2L will require premium fuel..

That's a 6.0 in that 2016 look at the spark arrestor. It's round. Also the engine cover is different.where you put the oil in is different and it is a red cap. The 6.2 had a black cap and a different air intake system. On the fuel most of us run premium anyways. I would have to drive them both to see if paying almost $10k for a year older boat and about the same performance as the new 380.

It's a 6.0 I actually like the inside of the 16 better - but it's a LOT more than the 17 (makes no sense)
