Windlass Up Button

Post by Gary C »

Can someone help me? My “up” button at the bow for my windlass stopped working. The down button works fine. I also have windlass controls on my Cobalt R6 OB by the helm and both the up and down buttons work there. Any idea how to fix the windlass up button at the bow?

The UP button probably activates a relay and the relay contacts handle the high current of the windlass. If you hear the relay contacts when the DOWN button is pressed, do you the same thing when the UP button is pressed?

How comfortable are you with a multimeter?

The winch does not turn when I push the Up button. But, it works fine when I push the down button.

I am not comfortable with a multimeter. Sorry.

Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Perhaps this will be of some use? This diagram shows a “control box” that is nothing more than two relays in one package, but your installation might contain two separate relays.

The UP button, UP relay or any of the wiring or connections between these components or to the motor might be at fault. It is going to be difficult to determine where the fault lies without a multimeter. We can help guide you with using a multimeter in tracing out the problem.

Pictures would be helpful of the switches and relays.

Hey GaryC...so glad you found us.

Sometimes corrossion occurs between the electrical contacts. Maybe squirt some CRC electrical contact cleaner into the switch. It just might help with the contacts that can be dirty.

Any pics?

And welcome aboard mate.

Yes, I was able to fix the problem. Using the drawing, I checked the wiring and found a loose one. When I plugged it in, the up button worked.

Thank you for the advice.
