Lewmar windlass circuit breaker tripping

Post by bslenk »

Hello, Just purchased a 2015 cobalt R7 a few days ago with 155 hours stored indoors, Pristine; however, we are having issues with the windlass circuit breaker tripping. It happened during the sea trial so the dealer replaced the circuit breaker even though the mechanic said it had good voltage at the breaker. The issue is it works intermittently and often fails At the worst time, for example trying to get out of a crowded Anchorage. The next morning it will work fine. I tried to get to inspect the wires, they are under rubber protectors and very hard to see, bolts were not rusted. always have engine running when deploying/ retrieving to ensure good voltage. The windless looks clean not rusted etc. etc. nothing is jumping out, any ideas? Frustrated….

So glad you found us bslenk.

Sorry about your Windlass woes. Sounds like the motor or the switch may be shorting causing the breaker to pop. Have you checked connections at both? Troubleshooting with an electrical tester can help diagnose.

Any pics?

And welcome aboard mate.

Have not tested yet, but connections looked good. I may have even bigger electrical problems, today motor cover, horn and stereo suddenly had no power. Couldn’t see any popped breakers or obvious blown fuses. Contacting dealer where I bought it from as they said they would make things right. Fingers crossed!

Additionally a bad battery was culprit behind electrical issues.

Diagnosing when there are two intermittent problems is more than twice as hard. Glad you got it sorted out, and thanks for reporting back with what you found!
