2024 Winter Pictures

Post by MnLakeBum »

I’ve been in Florida for most of the winter but am back in MN for 4 days to check on things. The lake ice and wind has pushed back the soil and rip rap on our shoreline. My neighbors tells me it’s only happened once in the last 20 years but I’m hoping for no further damage this spring. Over on a 210 square mile lake 25 miles east of us, every decade or so the winds in the spring will pile up the ice on the shorelines and sometimes push the ice right into or through some of the lake homes. We don’t have enough width in our channel or normally strong winds from the NE for that to happen. In some spots it’s pushed the shoreline and mounded it up about 2-3 feet closer to our house. I’ll have another project repairing the shoreline once things thaw out.

Oooh..sorry to hear that MNLB. We have had climate cycles where the same thing happens in Erie. Fortunately the climate cycle we are in now has been terrific for us here the last couple of years. Only had to shovel our driveway in Pittsburgh once and deicing our planes has rarely occurred this year here in the NE. Less salt on the roads means roads are not deteriorating and less rust on our vehicles. I'll take it while it lasts. As they say, the pendulum swings back and forth.

After our warmest winter ever, the lake ice went out March 17th. The average for ice out on our lake is April 19th and the previous record was March 26th. It’s great for all the lake home owners as the dock and boat lift installers now have time to do their installs before the Memorial Day Holiday which is typically when our boating season starts. We can easily get some 70° days in April so I’ll get my dock and toys in the water in the next few weeks. Last year the ice didn’t go out until May 6th and more than half the docks and boats weren’t in the water until June.

We got a dusting of snow last night but March is our snowiest month so nothing unusual. It’s damn good to see open water again!

Hi all:
I thought this picture was post worthy. It was taken with a trail Cam I'm #9 island 1000 region of the Saint Lawrence river. As you can see the nice eagle sitting on water’s edge but what I thought was really cool was the one getting ready to land on the dock.

Very cool pic. I never get tired of seeing bald eagles or other birds of prey in the wild.

Lake Winnipesaukee broke Ice Out record to and was declared on 3/17. Then we got two feet of snow on 3/23.

Ice Out has only occurred in March five times, four of those since 2010.

I still have skiing plans through 4/14, but hopefully the following weekend the boat is in and the weather is tolerable for a ride.

A beauty of a sunrise this morning and a couple of diving ducks were enjoying our lake as a resting spot on their journey farther north. I love it when the days get longer and we are less than a month away from those 8:30pm or later sunsets.

Picture from today at Owls Head ski area overlooking Lake Memphramagog; a 35 mile long lake that straddles VT and Canada. Wonder if they have border patrol on boats where the Canadian border crosses the lake? Would be fun to rip up that lake in summer.

Technically it's spring but doesn't look like it in South Lake Tahoe

I try not to be jealous of other people's life, but Bruce makes it hard. Thanks for the picks. I really miss snow skiing.

At 65 and semi retired..actually, dumping it all on my son for the winter may be more accurate LOL.._we run from winter as fast as we can.
We leave the Buffalo NY area and spent January through mid April in the warm and beautiful Bonita Springs/Naples Florida area, and it would take an act from god to make me come north during that time.

Ellie agrees. We literally had to pull her out of our house down there when we were coming home. See the look? She must have known.
