2021 VP 380 oil Weight

Post by Howl Yes 242 »

I see VP is now running their 10w-40, but previous 380 (6.0L) ran the 25w-40 oil. Anyone have thoughts on running the 25w in the newer 6.2L 380? With the load on the engine it seems like a good idea to run the 25w oil.

The 40 is the most important number - viscosity when cold is less important, except that a smaller difference between the two numbers means they had to use fewer friction modifiers in the oil and it may wear slightly better. I've been using the 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 15w-50 as long as I've had my boat, in part because it's readily available cheap at any Wal-Mart.

My VP 380 (6.0 L version, 2014) calls for 10w-40.
the "40" # is the most important number, as jhnmdahl said above.
