Diesels in sport and ski boats?

Post by jhnmdahl »

Mercury has introduced a marinized version of the 3.0L Volkswagen engine that was part of the emissions scandal, focusing on torque and fuel economy rather than top speed. It's said to be particularly suitable for wakeboarding boats, which can run all day at 10-12 MPH.

The engine is also absurdly expensive, with an MSRP of $33k. To make matters worse, the diesel costs $12k more than the gas engine in their test boat, but the test boat with the diesel sells for over $40k more than the same boat with the gas engine.

Mercury has tested the 3.0L diesel in a Cobalt 26SD, achieving 10mpg at 100 rpm, and 5.1 mpg at 3000 rpm (with a speed of 33 mph). Pretty impressive mileage for someone who cruises a lot, especially on a boat that big. It will be interesting to see how many manufacturers Mercury can get to adopt their new diesel...
