Boot up time was significantly improved along with a ton of new features I'm still trying out. I got my phone connected via bluetooth so notifications now show up on the screens which is pretty nice - especially underway.
Do you know where the SD card reader is on the garmin? My boat is 250 miles away and want to perform the upgrade next weekend.

SD Reader is on the front of the unit (lower right corner) under a door.

grab yourself an extra SD card and leave it in the device. You can make it your "active captain" SD card and then sync waypoints / tracks from your phone to the garmin. I have one SD card for upgrades and one mounted in the device to store data.

good call! I ordered 3 of them. 1 for the update and 2 to leave in the units.

Also forgot to mention, I have the dual screens on the R30. When I inserted the update card in one of the units both of them updated. They're linked in some fashion.

Upgrades just happen over the NMEA2000 buss. On the map charges comment above....I just upgraded mine for the third time with no charges involved. So I'm hoping that Garmin changed their posture.

The dealer did this for you? And....feel free to poke.....what is the NMEA2000 buss and how does that compare to the SD card upgrade?

My dealer was going to charge me, instead I downloaded the software and did it myself. NMEA2000 is the internal network that connects the depth sounder, engine and electronics together. When the firmware update starts it scans the bus and upgrades each component it can find.

Correct. Rereading my message, I can see how I was unclear! Apologies!

This is from Lowrance, but I got the same message for my old Garman GPS I used in my truck so it applies to all but the newest GPS devices:
HDS (Gen 1) with GPS Patch

Release Date: 8 April 2019

Version: GPS Patch

On April 6, 2019, a GPS Rollover event occurred.
GPS Rollover events occur every 20 years due to the date and time scale used by the Global Positioning System (GPS), which is based on counting weeks and seconds within a week. When the counter reaches 1024 weeks, it rolls back to week zero. If GPS products are designed without taking this into account, problems can occur with GPS products including incorrect date and time values and/or the loss of position information. Lowrance can confirm that all current generation devices are 100% compatible with the recent GPS week rollover event. There, however, are several legacy products that will require a software update.

Very cool, I'm still exploring the Garmin ActiveCaptain functionality, but looks like some promising integration with your smart phone. I can see text messages now on the dashboard which is pretty nice when trying to meet up with folks.

Do you have to pay anything extra for the Active Captain functionality? Seems like a great way to plan out waypoints. I won’t take delivery for another couple weeks, and you can’t play with the app until you pair the system.
