Painting a Volvo outdrive

Volvo recommends that you remove as little original paint as possible in prepping, use a zinc chromate primer, and follow some fairly specific steps for best results. Steps are generally:

Sand or sandblast to remove loose paint, and clean with water and detergent to remove grease. Roughen painted surfaces with Scotchbrite pad and rinse.

Clean with an acid cleaner that does not contain fluoride (DuPont 5717 recommended). Scrub in with Scotchbrite pad, not a metallic or steel wool pad, and rinse with clean water.

Treat all bare aluminum with DuPont 226S chromate conversion solution or another suitable zinc chromate primer. Brush the chromate
solution as required for 2 to 5 minutes to prevent it from drying on the surface. Rinse the surface thoroughly with water and allow to air dry. Paint within a day of drying, and do not touch with bare hands.

Where the prime coat is thin or where the surface is unpainted, prime with Volvo Penta Primer or PPG Super Koropon epoxy primer. Do not apply primer over hard finish coat. Primer solvents must be allowed time to evaporate and the primer must harden before applying the finish coat. Allow 8 to 12 hours drying time.

Apply finish coat using appropriate color Volvo Penta finish paint.

Sooo...I just ordered a can of VP primer and paint off of the interweb. Just one more project before the season gets here.

When I get my boat home I can scan the lower unit with my color scanner. Hopefully it will give me a paint code that will be a close match.

I will post the code here. You can then go to a paint store and buy what you need. Some can even put it in a rattle can if you want.

If I don’t remember this pm me and I will get it.

Ps. The system is for automotive colors. Sometimes no match is found.

Much easier to go online and order Volvo penta silver spray paint. It matches dead on and is already in the spray can and it shows up at your feet for with a big brown trk.

Take some pics with the color scanner during this process your doing.
I’ve been trying to nail the color in the stairwell for touch up. Kelly Moore Beige is tough.

Gotcha.

I have the mixing bank at my shop so I never would have thought about buying from Volvo. When I think paint from oem I think touch up.

I prepped a spot on my drive by wet sanding with 2000 then 3000 then 5000 paper I then compound, polish and swirl mark remove with my mini polisher. Then I scanned with the spectrometer provided me by Akzo noble.
I got a match for the Volvo silver. See pic

Also, ford code YV was a distant match.

Can someone post a pic of the volvo can that matches? I tried to buy a can a year ago and was not a match. Had to do a quick wipe off. Been gun-shy to order another $15 can that's the wrong color for the DPS drives.

Just take rabid’s paint recipe to a NAPA or a body shop and have a can mixed up.
