Reminder: Check your engine oil levels regularly

Post by thunder550 »

Just a reminder to check your engine oil level regularly. Until this past weekend, I hadn't checked it since I changed the oil last October. Pulled the dipstick Saturday morning and the oil level was almost too low to register  , had to add 3 quarts to get it back to the correct level. Total capacity is 7 quarts, so it seems to have burned 40% of the oil in 80-90 hours of use. Did some searching and it seems that the 502s are notorious for burning oil, something I didn't know before.

I'll be checking monthly from now on.

Good reminder... Mr Nauti is always good about checking before we roll out each weekend!

I check mine about every 2-3 weeks and haven't burned a drop. But I am for sure in need of a change at the end of the season.

My old boat with a 454 merc would use about a quart every other month.

My 8.1 will use about 1/4-1/2 a quart for the season. Check it every trip out while I'm checking my battery charger to ensure full charge.

I only put on 25 hrs a season. So no oil burned for me. I think I would at least change the oil every 50 hrs at a max.
You can have it done in 10 minutes anyways.
I use BG products. Try the epr system to see if a ring is hanging up? It comes with Moa and I loce the stuff. Try it? It will help with your child's starts. Lol even if your cold starts are 100 degrees. Lol

Merc service manual says 100 hours, that's what I was going by. I could do it more often, maybe I should. Nice thing is if I run it long enough it'll burn off all the oil, then I just put new stuff in a tada, mess-free oil change!
