Engine hatch supports

Post by GAH111 »

Greetings!
I'm new to the forum. I bought a 2008 220 two years back, it had just over 200 hours and was very well maintained. My question is my engine hatch will not stay up and I believe it is possible to be cut in half if it falls on you-very heavy. I found a chat with owners of an '05 with the same problem, they found 70lb Taylor Made replacements. Would these work for my boat or is there a difference between 05 and 08?

Thanks,

I'm sure they are all the same. I would even go a bit higher. That cover weighs a ton. I hate lifting mine every 2 minutes to show the bad boy off. If it was only blue 😢😢

Hello Gah111. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

You should be able to replace those. Look on the side and see if you can find a make and model number of the gas compression spring. Then google that. Amazon is also another great source.

I just replaced my anchor locker gas spring today. It was made by Attwood. After googling the model number stamped on the side I found it was a 15” extended and 9.5” compressed with a 40 pound compression force.

I happened to check AutoZone and they had quite a selection. I actually found something similar that worked great.

Yours is a lot bigger but the same principles should apply.

Any pictures?

Again, welcome aboard mate!

Here's your numbers. They're also a thread on these I think in the 10 series.

gas compression spring.jpg
The numbers on the gas compression spring is 3561MO 0140N 331/07 B5 What is confusing me is the line below the model number is SL25- and there is a small sticker that says 130#, this couldn't be a 130 pound spring could it?

and thanks for getting with me so quickly.

Yea they are model sl25 at 130#
Holy crap. I hope it goes up real easy. Does it even stay down. Lol
Are they that weak. I wanted to go stronger but that's way stronger.

I need to check my posts more often, I see this response was a while back. In fact the hatch won't stay up on it's own with two of these compression springs. I'm thinking I need to go with a lesser spring load, 70lbs seems to be a consensus. There are two holding up the hatch. If anyone has any reason that I need 130 lbs let me know, I would think the hatch wouldn't stay closed.

Correct. You don't want the hatch flying up while you're going down the hwy. But sure that it would but.
I am not going with 70 when I do mine. Maybe a 90. That lid is a tank.

I finally got someone that knows the application and could help me with correct compression spring replacement. I contacted a seller on Ebay and gave him the application and what was on the boat currently. He did not have it but suggested I contact Attwood (maker of SpringLift). I was on perpetual hold, left a voice mail that was never returned. I also contacted Iboats via email, one of the retailers Attwood had listed, the rep got back to me in a day saying that they did not have the specific part but gave me a link to LiftSupportsDepot.com who did have a replacement (not an Attwood part). the replacements are on the way. Interestingly, the site said to orient the shaft in a down position so oil will be in contact with the piston when closed. Good information. Also, it is a 130 # spring lift.

Got good feedback on this. Our boat is on Grand Lake in Oklahoma, I'm in Kansas so it took a while before I got things sorted out. The lift supports were the correct ones, 130 lbs and all. It was a quick easy on and off installation so I can recommend LiftSupportsDepot.
