Bottom paint is only put on boats that are left in the water all season. As in wet slipped. If you are putting it on a trailer or loading it up on a lift you do not need bottom paint. 90% of freshwater boats under 40ft do not have bottom paint.

It’s easy for the dealer to offer 25% off on a 10 series boat. Cobalt has net pricing on its website most of the year that reflects a 26% discount. That pricing doesn’t apply to the R series, you have to negotiate a discount with a dealer in a protected territory model. No dealer in Canada was prepared to sell out of their territory to me. In addition I had a trade that was only a year old, which complicated the deal.
As I said, he was willing to make that same deal on any model. My boat was a special order, I'm sure I could've got a better deal on one that was in stock. I always go back to, is the deal good to me and not take into account what others think. Just trying to be helpful, each dealer/region will offer different discounts/deals.

4th quarter results at Malibu are out today. Compared to the same quarter last year, Cobalt sold 2 less boats. Sales and margin dollars are up though because a more expensive mix of Cobalts were sold. However, in this fiscal year, Cobalt sold more boats than it did the year before. In the next fiscal year, Malibu expects to sell less Malibu and Cobalts than they did this year. So, my tea leaf reading says that management thinks that weather alone is not affecting the lower unit Cobalt sales for the fourth quarter. But, the plant expansion is still happening.

The next quarter ends at the end of September. Half of the quarter is already over. In my opinion, if units are trending down again for this quarter, management isn't going to be happy and will dig deep to get orders placed and might offer incentives to dealers we don't see. The end of september could be a good time to negotiate an order for a new Cobalt. But, I'm assuming the accountants will book the sale of a boat when an order is placed. I don't remember signing a purchase agreement when I ordered mine. If there is no purchase agreement when you order a boat, I doubt it's treated as a sale but is still something for management to talk positively about on a quarterly conference call.

Unrelated, if anyone is on the fence about getting a surf model, get it. Unit sales of Malibu branded boats were up in the 4th quarter (134 more units compared to the quarter before), unlike Cobalt being down 2. I'm conceding it's a trend that is here to stay and will help with resale.

The RV market is the perfect barometer of how the economy is doing. What other area can take the temperature of economic confidence and the feeling of economic security?
With that said, we’ve been on an economic ride for 10 years. At some point, it will naturally dip, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it started to dip rather soon. Smoke and mirrors are what we are seeing from this administration, and we will see the true results shortly.

Yup. Witness the bond yield inversion - it's pretty telling when the financial markets think short term returns will be greater than long term returns.

2 years from now is gonna be a GREAT time to buy a low-hours boat.

I am considering a new R33 and the dealer is offering about a 14% discount off of MSRP (e.g. website build price). Does anyone have any recent data points on what percent discounts dealers are offering off MSRP (before freight and dealer prep)? Thanks!
