Jeesh BB! I can't believe you would talk about Nauties exhaust right here in front of everybody. I mean, I had my mouth open and everything...

The temp issue is with all merc drives. Why it doesn't show up on the Volvo I can't answer that. They do something different in the water passages. But what I can say is the oil still gets hot in the Volvo. I would say two out of the last four dps drives I've had when I went to charge the drive lube it was black and not smelling so good. So that tells me they get hot. Now I only run mine about 25 hours a year. So make sure you change your fluid. After this year I'll know if the new lube helped in my drive or not. But I would almost consider changing it twice a year if you put on more hours than me. Now we tube and wakeboard alot not just a bunch of cruising around and I don't run wide open to much unless Nauti is behind me :-) I don't want to hear her exhaust as it will make me want to add it!
Kind of shocking that a company as large and old as Mercruiser would design an outdrive that needs exterior plumbing add ons to run at an appropriate temperature. I guess we’ll see how the Volvo DPS does in my lake where summer water temperatures that seem to top out at around 65 - 70F in July and August.

Of course nothing surprises me these days. My 2013 BMW 5 series needed an extra cost trickle charger installed to allow top up charging of the battery in our cold climate. Apparently the car was designed with a lower output alternator that charges the car primarily while decelerating, to save fuel, but in stop and go traffic combined with cold weather the battery can run down. So I was plugging the car in several times a winter for a top up charge.

You’d think Mercury could find a way to keep a machine partly submerged in water cool while running. I wonder what happens to them in the summertime in the Carribean where the water temperatures are much higher?

These drives still run for ever without them. But like anything we like to improve on things and we don't like white chalky build up on our drives and the shower helps eliminate that as well. Bonus. If you do maintenance to the drive and everything else it will last.

Here you go race fans. For those of you thinking about a drive shower, this is a great video of how to install one and then seeing it action on the water.
