1998 Cobalt 232 fixer upper

Post by Kdocca »

I recently bought a 1998 Cobalt 232 that was acquired by a marina from someone who stopped paying their dry stack fees. It had been sitting for a while and needed a good clean, and some things repaired, but it’s cleaning up very nice. Here are some of the things that I’ve done over the past couple weeks.

The trailer needed some major work. The actuator was bent and needed to be replaced. The brakes had been removed and the brake lines were totally destroyed.
I replaced the actuator, installed disc brakes, new brake lines, and new bearings all around.

The bow was missing and I was thinking about getting an upholstery shop to make a replacement, but knew that it wouldn’t look quite right. The curved back of the cushion would be really hard to match. Thankfully I was able to find one on eBay for less than $100! It’s not an exact match, but eventually I’ll get it reupholstered to match.

The stereo wasn’t working, so I decided to replace the whole system. I put in a Kenwood marine receiver, and a Boss 1950w marine amplifier. Sounds great with the JL speakers. I also added a 3 way 12v outlet with a cigaret lighter plug, a usb outlet with a volt meter, and an on off switch. I wanted the volt meter to make sure I don’t run down the battery too much when we’re sitting in a cove listening to music.

I also replaced the bow navigation light, the stern light, and the horn switch.

Things I plan on doing:
It has minor oxidation, so I want to try the Meguiars One Step Compound. Anyone try this product?
Vinyl wrap the panels in the helm.
Replace the steering wheel.
Install led lighting in the engine compartment (the single light in there is not nearly bright enough), and led strip lights to replace the under lighting.

Any other suggestions for upgrades are totally welcome!

I would use led bulbs in both navigation lights. They get hot.
Nice looking set up. Both get cockpit seats were replaced also.

Both navigation lights are LED. I want to convert all the lights to LED eventually.

Those seats were on the boat when I got it. Thinking about buying these cobalt condura seats. Guy is asking $200 for both of them.

If they are in good condition that's a great price.

Looking good! So how does the 7.4 ( big block talk right there) perform? Have you had it out yet?

It has the 7.4 gi. I got it up to 51 on gps during our test run with a full tank of gas, 4 adults and 2 kids. The duo props could probably use a service. There are a couple small dings. Might be able to get some more mph after that.

I love a good Fixer Upper story! Nice job!

Used the same Kenwood head unit in my old 343. Great unit with plenty of features.

I bet she's just soooo happy to no longer be neglected and will give you years of good service! It's like picking up a new dog from the shelter.... Enjoy!

I recently bought a used 1998 200. I’m replacing the wheel - it a vinyl tan and leather - Loki’s like it has wings, kind of - but one I remove the nut and washer I took the wheel off and have a plastic sprocket looking thing. Any idea how to remove it? Do I just pull really hard?

I would like to replace the steering wheel on my 1998 to 232.
I’ve had the boat since 2000 and it has been a joy. Steering wheel is cracked and the duck tape just doesn’t hold any more. Does anybody have a source for replacement steering wheels?
