Cobalt 202cs owner

Post by Roy J »

I've owned a 1998 202cs since I bought it new in 1997. It's been a fantastic boat. I keep it on Lake Granbury near Fort Worth, which is a nice lake for skiing.

The 202cs is the most beautiful competition water ski boat ever built, in my opinion. It has also been rugged and reliable. I do all the maintenance myself, usually on the dock at the marina.

Welcome Roy. Great boat!! We loce these bad boys!
Now let's update that sony sound system or at least the Sony speakers. You can keep them if you want to keep it original. Also let's update those yellow plastic cupholders. Stainless steel cup holders is one of the cheapest best upgrades you can do and make the whole boat look 20 years younger!!

I’ve been thinking about stainless cup holders. Maybe soon. I’ll also put a new stereo in this summer if the price of oil recovers.

Here’s the tranny after I reinstalled it.

I also replaced this damper plate while I was at it.

Welcome, very nice boat! Does it have cruise control/perfect pass?

It does not have cruise control/perfect pass. I think that was pretty new in '97.

I've had the boat at home for a few weeks and really gone over the little details that are tough to do at the marina. I also made this boat cover support today. I saw something similar on Youtube and liked it.

I am new to the group...and saw the 202CS posts. I'm an owner of a 1999 202CS which I picked up from the original owner in 2005. I absolutely love this boat. Super high quality, a towing beast, and famous cobalt reliability from an injected small block chevy (mercruiser black scorpion 330HP)

Wow. Great pics sbiddle. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum.

Love the scorpion series Merc produced for awhile. So sexy and packs a lethal punch from that size.

These ski boats really seem coveted by their owners. Very unique.

Rotated the last pic for ya’.

Again welcome aboard mate!

These are stunning boats! Why did Cobalt halt production after such a short run? How does it handle chop compared to other toe boats of that vintage?

When you’re driving one of these boats, you are looking for glass. They are not particularly fun in chop. I have to slow down to below 20 mph when chop is high. They are great on rivers, but not so great in big reservoirs. I have to stop if I pass a surf boat going the opposite direction at close quarters.

That being said, they are fantastic ski boats. They are also exceptionally beautiful in my opinion. I told my daughter that the only thing prettier was a classic mahogany Chris-Craft. She said, “Nobody wants a brown boat.. Ours is the coolest boat on the lake.” That makes me feel good.
