Re: Server errors and high latency today

John can you get your hammer back out and give the site a good whack? Upload time is excruciatingly sloooow. I thought it was just me, but others I've talked to say the same. Sometimes when I try to load a picture I just give up and walk away. And pics in a thread either load slow or not at all. Or switching between threads takes a long time, and again, sometimes I give up and leave the site.

Again, thanks for EVerything you do here for us!

I haven’t been able to see or reproduce the latest image-related problems. Is it only a problem at certain times a day? Also, does it change if you’re on a different network (e.g., cellular vs WiFi)? I’ll see what I can do, but problems I can’t see are 10x harder to fix.

John is been doing it for awhile. I thought it was just my phone or my wifi. But I have to refresh my page then the pictures load. It's every picture pretty much.

I can load a full page of the memorial day pics thread with photos in 3-4 seconds on my computer or phone, and upload a high resolution test photo to the thread in about 4-5 seconds. I've tried it repeatedly over the past few days, and am not able to reproduce the same problems others are having. Obviously I want to find and fix the problem so this remains a useful and fun place to be.

I did do some database optimization and reset the board cookie, etc., but it's hard to say that will help if I can't find or reproduce the problem in the first place. If it happens again, can you let me know: what thread, what device you're on and what browser you're using, what your Internet connection is, and what specifically seems to be dragging it down (e.g., does text all load but pictures don't?). Thanks guys,

John

Yes, I'll pay more attention to the time of day. I use a Samsung Galaxy 8+, and normally pics will load in a manner of seconds. It's very possible it's a bandwidth issue.

Like I know what that is? Doesn't bandwidth have something to do with how wide the stage is? 😁

Yes, I have since been getting the server error while attempting to load the site at home on our cable internet. Maybe 15-20% of the time. Sometimes with uploads. Sometimes just visiting a topic. :geek: Also occurs on mobile devices. :ugeek:

Same for me on both my iPhone 8 and Galaxy Note Edge. Text is fine, pics half load then hang for bit before fully loading.

The 500 errors should be logged on our server, but it's shared and the host (bluehost) is being a pain about sharing them. I'll keep on it and see what I can find out. Thanks for the detective work guys,

Some of the images in recent threads are absolutely massive, and not shrunk down at all when uploaded or posted, so result in many megabytes per image being transferred. I've changed board settings so that new images (but not old ones) are limited to 1000 pixels in the largest dimension, which should result in much smaller images and faster page loads, albeit at the possible expense of slightly slower uploads as images are resized.

We'll see if this fixes anything,

Hmmm.
So will the "file size to large" message appear more often when uploading pics with this new change jmd? :?:

It should resize it automatically when being uploaded, and not show any errors or warnings. I'm testing it now in another thread, but please let me know if you see any adverse effects too. I only have windows and IOS devices to test on, but want to make sure it works better for everyone,
