Trailering - Rear tie-down points

Post by Watson728 »

Hi all,

New cobalt owner here with an '05 220. What I'm unsure of are the acceptable rear tie down points for the boat. The 220 of this year has the usual transom tie down points, but the extended swim platform also has tie down points integrated.

The standard transom points don't seem ideal as the cause the strap to curve up around the back of the boat and would seem to create a rub point. The platform points seem the more ideal, bit I'm not sure that they would be strong enough?

Your thoughts are appreciated

Straight to the transom is always best. Greater capacity to keep the boat attached to the trailer. You can always "engineer" a protection pad between the strap and the back edge. There shouldn't be any movement of the strap, so the chance of it rubbing a wear-mark should be minimal.

I would want to keep them on the transom. Keep the straps very tight and you will not have any wear marks. My 97 220 had them touch also and I never seen any gel coat damage.

I go straight to the transom. My set up had me worried it may rub so I put the 3m clear protective film on the boat.

Yea it sucks that's for sure. I used the swim platform bracket on my 200 but I use the transom on my 220. Really your ok either way.
