Mercruiser Smartcraft Steering Angle Sensor

Has anyone installed the mercruiser smartcraft steering angle sensor? I see the plug for it in the wiring harness at the stern. Not sure I really need it but would be helpful knowing the angle of the drive when I back out of my dock since I am in close quarters.
