Detailing around the emblem and letters

Post by Titaniumboy »

This guy is a magician at creating mirror finishes in gelcoat. He used to be one of the main guys at Deckhand Detailing in Seattle.

Here he shows how to compound and buff around the raised letters and emblem. Start at 8:35 for the actual work on the emblem.

He starts with 3M Marine Heavy Cut, followed by 3M Perfect-It AC EX, followed by Meguiar’s Flagship.

I wouldn’t let anyone do that to our letters….all while he’s trashing Cobalt for putting letters on their hulls. Good grief. One piece of wool loop from that massive pad can snag and break that plastic like he mentions. There are smaller tools that can do it much better, safer, and faster around those letters. We had ours done last month with excellent results.

(We also use the exact same products as this gentleman.)

I agree that it looks scary. You and I would probably end up busting the letters if we tried this with a large wool pad, but this guy obviously has done this before successfully. He is a bit arrogant, but has some serious skills gained during 14 years of doing 150 boats per year.

He spends at 30-35 minutes on EACH side just dealing with the letters. They end up looking great, but I am sure I would pitch a fit just like him if I did this for a living.

More magic on Cobalt gelcoat.
