Thanks for the extra thoughts ...
The mechanic came out today and poked about a bit - the conclusion is that the bearing on the water pump has failed and the shaft is starting to slide out; at least I think that is what he tried to explain to me
He tells me the pump will need replacing.

Thanks guys, I'll let you know how we got on after they replace the pump.

It seems like replacing the water pump did the trick - the weather has been bad since so I have only had a short run to check it but so far so good
