Help! Broke 282 ski pylon base mount tubing
Found this site under stress. But glad to have found it. When large tube submarined at start up, my pylon pole “base mount” broke-bent-cracked fiberglass. Looking for a replacement base mount. Cobalt dealer only offers as a complete kit with pole....and apparently custom made for $1700???
Looking for any options to replace just base mount. Where to look for Cobalt parts? Options?
2006 282
Pylon kit part number: 401864
Maybe the A28/R5/R7 part will work?
This part number is 404598
Can any A28/R5/R7 owners post pic of their tube pylon mount please?
Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Hello 282C. Welcome to the CobaltChat forum. Sorry to hear about your ski pylon base issue.
I gotta say, this one has me puzzled. That base and pylon are built like a tank and fastened into the fiberglass with a massive mounting plate.
A simple tube submarining should not cause that kind of damage. I've pulled 4-5 big tubes at the same time with no issues, including submarined ones.
Do you have any pictures of this? I know raising the engine platform on a 262 with the ski pylon inserted will cause major damage...mostly to the fiberglass though. The 282 may have the same issue.
Ebay may be a source ...or a parts boat. There was a 263 parts boat in Rochester that had that piece. I believe it's the same design.
Others will chime in including our resident 282 expert, Cmattj.
Again, welcome aboard mate.

Re: Help! Broke 282 ski pylon base mount tubing
Yes sorry to hear but they’re base mounted to pull inside the transom. That’s the bracket you see out the back . If it loosens it can flex.
It’s uses the same components as the 262,263,282 so you have options to find one.
If the hull base is restorable you could have one fabbed.
A member here sliderule could possibly assist you.
Post some pics!

After you get her secure I’m sure you’ve been told about the sports stuff tow ball that prevents tube submarine at take off.

Re: Help! Broke 282 ski pylon base mount tubing
Thanks for the welcome. Great to see options. Even better to make connections with resident experts. Hope to hear from them soon. Absolutely agree with confusion of what caused failure. I too have pulled multiple tubes and had the occasional submarine scenario. This literally is a mystery as I also thought you could pull a house off the foundation with the base mounted pole. It was a very slow and smooth acceleration for no more than a second. (The amount of time you check for traffic and look back.) And the rope was already tight. No jerk. Something failed internally. Didn’t even feel the “tug” from the tube which tells me the bracket must have come loose inside the transom?

It almost looks like something was welded to the side of the chrome tube in the last picture and it broke loose?

Thought same. Should have looked at my engine bay floor for any loose plates or backing plates that may have fallen. Would like to see what it looked like before it broke. Surely it had to be mounted to the steel beam you see in the pics?

Hey 282Captain,
Your in luck. I think I have an extra one. I dropped the pylon from my 262 in the water a decade ago and had to purchase the complete set to get it. I believe I still have it laying around. Ill check around for it and if it is still around, you can have it.

I think they should warranty that.
That's crazy. I can't believe husk has a spare. Just going to show you just never know.

Re: Help! Broke 282 ski pylon base mount tubing
I would assume that would fall under the 10 year warranty, being an '06 It is 3 years out of warranty. Still being a weld break I would bring it up!
I can't believe someone had that part!

Definitely want it! Feel like I hit the lottery. I never come out ahead on this stuff. Thank you so much. Great forum input allowed for this to happen. Thanks to all for support and help. As for the weld, I’m definitely going to show Cobalt. Doubt Malibu will have a good response, but at least they should know. And, it still doesn’t make sense how an innocent single person tube at idle/ start speed caused so much damage???
