COBALT quality not the same from past years

Post by crmoncada »

On my R8 SURF delivered on the end of june (3 months later from the original date), the dealer told me that COBALT was short on sof-trac mat's and delivered the boat without them, the sof trac mat on the platform came without the red accents (which I ordered), the bottom drive paint scraped and in parts you can see the aluminium (I paid for ocean-x) the sales man told me that cobalt will send a replacement of the bottom drive, when the sales man lowered the electric prisma tower in front of me, the corner of the tower frame hit and scraped the paint of the bottom bracket (the answers from the sales man are "Don't lower the tower to not cause more damage), a lot of bolts are loose and missing on the tower covers and speakers (I fixed), the electric seat don't move to front or rear (trip the breaker) (I fixed) and the drive gear came with 2.32 which was supposed to come with 2.14 (volvo 430 Surf), at this point I had sent 5 email's to the dealer (last one copying the sales rep of COBALT George Muffick) and I didn't have any answers about it, beside this the windshield window on the first WOT moved down of it's position, the rear stereo control does not work and this weekend we washed the boat to use it on labor day and found a crack on the gel coat (18 hrs on engine), I wonder if the puts the necessary resin to make the hull rigid with the resin shortages because the tower flexes all the hull to the sides. I don't know what to think at this point.

I have other problems that I already fixed. Any suggestions to what else I can do? I like the boat and I don't want to escalate to Lemon Law or report to BBB.

Wow. Sorry to hear about this crmoncada .
These items are unacceptable for a brand new Cobalt. I’d actually drive the boat to the dealer and go through with the rep everything that you have listed. Follow that up with an email documenting your conversation along with the agreed upon solution.

CRM - Sorry to hear about your experiences so far. We got our R8S last week of May and have a couple of same issues. Electric Prisma folding tower rubs on ours and paint came off when lowering tower. When underway the Prisma tower shifts side-2-side significantly and flexes the gunnels enough that you can see & feel it. I worry about safety and longterm damage with this type of movement. We kept getting Surf System error codes (Loss of Engine Data, Loss of GPS, Stbd Surf Tab fault) but dealer was able to fix after 3 visit back to their shop.

Keep us posted on your progress and wishing you the best.

Seems they really have forgotten quality touches from years ago. back when they first started making the 19' bow riders they had a problem with the top side flexing too much and would allow the center windshield to fall through. So in the early 80s they started putting in a steel yoke to stiffen it up and hold it together. maybe they need to re visit this idea

Could some of this be attributed to "first model year."

It's typically recommended not to buy the first model year of a car. Can the same hold true for boats?

Wondering in regards to the tower flexing the gunnels if it has to be with the taller height throwing off the physics and perhaps requiring more support within the structure of the gunnels?

I'm just spit balling here

I just shared my frustration with this poor workmanship to the local Cobalt dealer that I have a boat on order with. He said he will take the information to the dealer show with him next week.
He is going to let me know what the powers to be have to say about this mess.

The last trip we made to the factory they were still doing this to date. So I'm sure they still use this in the R series to date.
They changed the stringer system from what Bobrae heard. So who knows.

Here is our quality issue. Unless I lock down the windshield this is how it rests. Even with it locked down the windshield line is crooked.

Not to mention emblems flying off
