New R6 Surf Arrived

Post by micheald »

Just received our new R6 surf this week (ordered on February 1, 2021).

My first impressions so far is that the wave is incredible. The boat handles chop well, much better than any boat we have owned. First week in and we love it so far. The dual electronic screens will take some time to get used to.

Now, time to sell the old boat (2017 R3 WSS Surf). I should have taken more pics of the interior, I will post more soon.

Great color combo. That was one of my choices I designed but went with the pacific blue and black combo. So far we set our trim at 0, speed at 11.3 and only 1/2 tank in the opposite side we are surfing. We tried a speed of 10.7 but the wave was too tall.

This boat is almost identical to the one we have on order. We have the black windshield, prisma tower and the same board racks. Also, the have the same stereo. How does the stereo sound? Have you noticed the gun whales flexing or the windshield moving at all?

We only have 6 hours on the boat so far (in the last week), been running all tanks full and at 11.5 mph with trim at about 10%. I'm going to start playing around with tank levels. Our daughter was getting good behind our old R3 surf, but this wave was pretty intimidating to her at first. If you have any advice how to set up the dual screens, that would be awesome! I haven't spent the time to work on them, but they aren't very user friendly as first glance.

The stereo sounds amazing, and a great feature is that you can set different sound levels for the bow, cockpit, and the surfer.

I was looking for those gunwale/windshield issues over the weekend, having seen someone else discuss that in another thread. I have seen nothing like that so far, but will update if I do.

My fuel level gauge already stopped working, and the bimini top is ripped where the holes for the rope go through, but overall, very pleased so far.

Are you sure the rope isn't supposed to go over the top of the bimini? On the my R7 there is a hole that you stick your hand through to attach the rope to the ski tower. It may be different on the R6.

There is a velcro flap (velcro on the bottom and top of the bimini so that the flaps overlap) but where they stitched the edges of the hole, the stitching has already ripped and holes are apparent. I should post some pics; will get some more next time we are on the boat.

My R5 surf tore there when we surfed and put it though the hole that you are talking about. We never had it fixed under warranty because it didn’t tear anymore before we traded it on the ordered boat. We will use the side balls (or whatever you call them) on the new one when surfing, but will have to figure something out when wakeboarding I’m sure.
Thank you for the feedback on the tower. That makes me feel a bit better. I’ve been all over my dealer and the Cobalt rep since I heard of the problems.

The platinum stereo is the bomb. One thing I did was set the default zone for the rear control to be sport. While surfing the person in the rear turns the music up and you want it loud on the tower speakers. I’ve so far just stuck with the default screen setup. GPS on the left and gauges on the right. When surfing I push the home button on the left screen select surf mode which changes the screen on the right. Then I put up the rear camera view on the left screen.

Seems like setting the surf system to constant would be tough because the variance in the number of people and where they sit.
My R5 was hard to dial in consistently because of that. Or is the R6 less sensitive to weight?
Really excited about the surf gate system though!

We have a month in. Surf screen seems to set the trim at about 10% at 11.2 MPH. I thought that was automatic? Great, huge wave although we haven't had a surf boat before. Had the starboard surf actuator replaced the first weekend( dealer said it was a known issue with a batch?) but no problems since. Love the boat. Wish the gas tank was a few gallons bigger. Look forward to getting some more surf setting from you all!

Do you know what head unit control at the helm they are currently using? The rockford unit in my R7S was a pain in the butt to change zone volumes and I hope the new one is easier. Also, does the R6 have audio controls in the Garmin's or do you still have to add another bus cable?
